Basic Auto Insurance is mandatory throughout Canada. Provincial governments determine which benefits are included as minimum requirement for coverage and which benefits are options available for those seeking additional coverage. Accident Benefits and Third Party Liability coverage are mandatory in Alberta. Typically, coverage against loss or damage to the driver’s own vehicle is optional. If you are found at fault in an auto accident you can be sued for damages. By purchasing auto insurance you are releasing yourself of the financial burden of paying for those damages in an auto accident from your own pocket.
AVAILABLE COVERAGE
At Roger E Johnson Agency we can put together an auto policy that suits individual needs. Below are some of the coverage’s that are available.
Section A – Third Party Liability
This section of your policy will pay for bodily injury and property damage you are found at fault from your ownership, use or operation of a vehicle. This is mandatory coverage in Alberta.
Section B – Accident Benefits
Provides limited medical protection, death benefits and lost wages to you the insured from use or operation of the vehicle. Again mandatory coverage in Alberta.
Section C- Loss or Damage to Insured Vehicle
Below are four areas of coverage which are available to protect the insured vehicle. This coverage is optional. Examples of what each area covers are as follows:
All Perils: All coverage’s below combined with some exclusions.
Collision: Only impact with another vehicle, road or object.
Comprehensive: Impact with an animal, vandalism, theft, fire etc.
Specified Perils: Fire, theft, hail or wind, etc. (not deer nor vandalism)
Common Endorsements found on most auto policies:
- SEF 44 – Family Protection Endorsement – This allows your policy to pay for damages to you when the responsible party does not have insurance coverage.
- SEF 20 – Loss of Use – This coverage allows for rental money to be paid by the insurance company when your vehicle is being repaired from an insured peril.
- SEF 27 – Non-Owned Auto Liability – This allows coverage of liability and physical damage (usually up to a specific limit) to be extended to a vehicle that is rented by an insured.
- SEF 43R – Waiver of Depreciation – Put on vehicles when purchased new by the insured’s to allow no deduction for depreciation in the first 30 months of ownership when a loss occurs.
One of your biggest investments you’ll make in your life will be your home. Protecting that investment will require the proper Home Owners Insurance. A home owner’s policy is purchased to protect that investment against certain perils.
AVAILABLE COVERAGE
Section I Property Coverage
Under this section your policy is broken down to 4 more sections as follows:
- Dwelling – Coverage of your home.
- Private Structures – Garage (used for personal use only) Garden Shed.
- Personal Property – Personal items in your home you own, wear or use, such as your clothes, dishes, television sets, and appliances.
- Additional Living Expense – This area covers expenses over and above your normal living if you are not able to live in your home due to a loss or you are denied access by government order.
Other various endorsements may be added to your policy to cover gaps in coverage where normal wordings exclude coverage. This will vary depending on each individual needs and should be discussed with one of our brokers to ensure you have adequate coverage.
Common endorsements found on most home policies are:
Guaranteed Replacement Cost: This endorsement will pay the cost to rebuild your home should the cost be over and above the amount of coverage on your policy.
Inflation Protection: Increases your protection coverage to keep up with inflation so adequate coverage can be maintained.
Sewer Back Up: Allows your policy to pay for loss due to backing up or escape of water from sewer, sump or septic tank. As well allows for coverage due to accumulation of ice or snow on the exterior of the roof or eaves troughs.
Section II Liability Coverage
- Legal Liability – Your insurance company will pay the amounts that you become legally responsible to pay as damages due to bodily injury or property damages to where the insurance applies and to the limits on your policy.
- Voluntary Medical Payments – Reasonable medical expenses from your unintentional injury to others on your property will be paid up to the limit on your policy. You as the insured do not need to be found at fault to have this coverage.
Condominium Unit Owners Insurance needs are different than a typical homeowner due to that in a Condominium Association there is a Master Insurance Policy which typically covers the basic building(s), walls, roof, floors and elevators. Most policies leave the responsibility to you the condo unit owner to insure appliances, carpeting, cabinets, wall coverings, personal belongings and in some circumstances the interior walls. As well additions or alterations made by you at your expense to your condo may not be covered by the Master Policy. If you the condo owner have added a better quality of carpet than originally installed this extra expense possibly may not be covered by your Master Policy. If damage to your unit does not exceed the deductible of the Master Policy again you may not be able to recover your loss from that policy.
Liability is another important coverage on a Condominium Policy written separate from your Master Policy. This coverage covers you for property damage or any bodily injury that you the condo unit owner may be found at fault for. For example should you have a fire in your condo unit and it spreads to your neighbors unit you may be sued for the damages and any personal injury that occurs. Without liability insurance you would be responsible to cover those expenses on your own.
Whatever your Condominium Master Policy covers you should review it and ensure you have a separate condominium policy in place to cover any gaps in the Master Policy.
You may not own the home you reside in, however, you still have contents that would be expensive to replace all at once. Tenant Insurance is for those individuals who rent a location and would be held responsible for the property damage to the residence for unintentional damage. This policy insures your belongings from loss as well. A personal property inventory should be done to alleviate the stress at a time of a loss.

Many home-based business owners assume that their home insurance covers their home–based business activities as well. Not only is it not covered by your home insurance but your home-based business may void your home insurance.
Home-Based Business’ need liability insurance to extend to the operations of their business as well as any personal injury that may happen while a client is on the premises or elsewhere. Contents that are used for the business are not always covered by the home property insurance and in the event of a fire any supplies; stock or office furniture may not be covered.
Examples of home-based business’ that are often over looked by insured’s are the sale of small kitchen items, jewellery, make-up and more. Coverage is often available on your home policy with an extra endorsement for a very minimal premium.
